Attentive Recollection by Suzi Clark

Fleeting qualities of sight and sound also fascinate Suzi Clark. Her short experimental film Attentive Recollection features flickering movements registered close to the liminal level of consciousness. Flipping discs with text and quickly shifting lights and shadows, suggest the kind of experience that hovers at the edge of meaning. Rapid change, hypnotic repetition, and after-effects of material seen but not held are the subject of this work. She has researched the dream machines of Ian Sommerville, Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs in the 1960s, and looked at the effects of fragmentation, ‘cut-ups’ and random shifts in text and narration. Aspects of perception that defy analysis or description are of continuing interest to her in her studio practice.

Suzi Clark is originally from Northern Ireland, and moved to Scotland to study Fine Art and Philosophy for BA(Hons) at the University of Dundee. She is currently in her final year of study and has developed a practice which centres on perception and the deconstruction of language. She plans to continue practicing as an artist and perhaps complete a Masters course in the near future.
